Importing Live Fish into Western Australia
At Bundarra Tropical Fish Farm, we are committed to providing our Western Australian customers with accurate information to ensure smooth importation of live fish. Western Australia (WA) has strict biosecurity regulations to protect its unique aquatic environment. As an importer, it is your responsibility to comply with these regulations before receiving live fish from us.
Important Considerations for Importing Live Fish into WA
1. Check If the Species Requires Translocation Approval
- Some fish, crustaceans, and corals require translocation approval before they can be imported into WA.
- Check whether your species requires approval by visiting the DPIRD translocation system or emailing translocation@dpird.wa.gov.au.
- Fish listed under Federal Live Import List Part 1 are generally allowed without additional translocation approval.
2. Ensure the Species Is Not Noxious
- Noxious fish are prohibited from being imported into WA.
- Check the full noxious fish list here.
3. Label Shipments Correctly
To facilitate smooth inspections, all shipments must be clearly labeled with:
- Scientific name (Genus and Species)
- Common name
- Quantity of fish
- Supplier details (Bundarra Tropical Fish Farm)
Failure to provide proper labeling may cause delays or rejection at inspection.
4. Biosecurity Inspections on Arrival
- All live fish shipments must undergo inspection upon arrival in WA.
- Contact the Quarantine WA (QWA) Scheduler at +61 8 9334 1800 to schedule an inspection.
5. Water Quality & Disease Control
- Ensure that transport water is free from snails, snail eggs, and other prohibited organisms.
6. Importing Crustaceans & Other Aquatic Organisms
- Additional restrictions apply to live crustaceans under WA’s Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAMA).
How to Prepare for a Smooth Import Process
- Verify species approval: Use DPIRD’s online translocation tool or contact their team.
- Check for noxious species: Cross-check with FRMR Schedule 5.
- Properly label shipments: Include all required details.
- Schedule inspections: Contact QWA before your shipment arrives.
- Ensure clean transport water: Avoid carrying restricted organisms in water.
